What is a proverb and why should I care?

This really started when I was much younger. I was really into Star Trek: The Next Generation. There was one specific episode in season 2[1] where Wesley Crusher fell in love with a girl who shared with him her "rules". Truth be told, I remember none of the rules shared in that episode but I was struck at the concept of explaining the world around me via "rules". Some might call them axioms or proverbs, but they more or less represent something that is generally true in ordinary life and their exceptions prove their validity. So in high school, shortly after I saw this episode as a rerun, I started writing my own. There were/are some I borrowed, but all had direct relevance to my life or was based on something that I observed first-hand. I have amassed quite a few and while not any less true, many are simply touch points intended to jog my memory of a particular story---a one-line journal entry so to speak. I intend on sharing some, letting other fade into times meant for the past, and expounding on a few that have stood the test of time. Why should you care? Honestly, you probably shouldn't. They might not be anything more than an oversimplification or reduction to absurdity. But I have come to realize that the way I see the world might have some value for more people than just myself. However, I acknowledge that they might not have the same value for everyone and that there will certainly be people who have lived in the exceptions and are more than willing to quibble with them. My writing and expounding on them should not be interpreted as my belief that these carry more weight than they should. These are simply things I've observed and mused about and in most cases have come to see the truth therein. That being said, I'm now old and curmudgeonly enough that you'd be hard pressed to convince me these aren't worth thinking about for yourself. Either way, enjoy them or don't.
